What is an ORI number, and where do I find mine?

By TrustedShield · Last reviewed

An ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) is the code that tells Florida's fingerprint system which agency should receive your background check results. You get it from the employer, school district or licensing board that asked for your fingerprints, not from the fingerprinting provider.

Why the ORI matters

Your fingerprints are sent to FDLE, and the ORI decides where the results go next. If it's missing or wrong, the agency that needs your results never receives them, and you may have to start over.

That's why the ORI is the one detail worth checking twice before your prints are sent.

Where to find it

  • The screening instructions or email from your employer's HR team
  • Your school district or childcare employer's onboarding packet
  • Your licensing board's fingerprinting page. Many Florida boards publish their ORI there
  • The Clearinghouse instructions from a healthcare employer

It usually appears next to a reason code, which tells the state why you're being screened. Bring both.

Can't find it?

Ask whoever requested your fingerprints. They're the only ones who can give you the right ORI. If you're stuck, text us a photo of your instructions before your appointment and we'll help you find it.

Official sources

Rules and processing times can change. Always follow the instructions from the agency that asked for your fingerprints.
